#MadeinNigeria Series: Nigerian Designer Spotlight – BOYA APPARELS

How was your weekend? Mine was relaxing. I am starting a #MadeinNigeria Series this New Week and I’ve got a new Designer on the spotlight today. I love finding Nigerian Brands and in support of #MadeinNigeria products.

My sister wore a top from this designer, I liked it and wanted to know about the brand. I spoke to the designer, such a humble and funny personality and conducted a mini-interview  (LOL) to learn about his brand. This brand has been seen on many people from media personality Lamide and Zainab Balogun to Top Model Tarmar Awobotu. I am starting my week with a simple yet classy look from the brand. Guess the price tag of my dress? Let’s find out below.

Tell me about yourself?

My name is Ajibode Babajide Joseph. I am the creative director of the clothing brand. BOYA APPARELS. (B stands for Babajide, O for Olabimpe, Y for Yejide and A for Ajibode). Olabimpe and Yejide are my sisters. We have Ready To Wear (RTW) and Made to Measure.

Can you tell me where you are from and what’s your family like?

I am from Ogun state and from a large polygamous family of 9 (I’m second to the last).

So when did you start your brand? What motivated you to start?

I started my brand in May 2013 to be precise. I had just graduated from University and was home for a few months trying to get a holiday job at one firm or the other, none pulled through. I thought of starting a business but I didn’t have any capital to start with as I had just graduated. So my elder sister called me one day and said she had a gift for me. I was happy because I knew it was something big. She said to me ” Jide you are fashionable, you pay attention to details before wearing an outfit, you even design your clothes before giving to your tailor”. So I got you a form to enrol at a fashion school. She paid my tuition fees and gbam (chuckles), I started the best journey of my life.

Who is your target market?

My market audience is majorly youths between the ages of 18-50 but we sure cater to funky oldies too as 50 is the new 40.

Please describe your brand in one word?

Have you faced any challenges while running your brand?

Like every other business in Nigeria, electricity is a major factor, unfortunately we don’t get enough of it so we spend a huge amount 0n diesel and petrol.

How has your personal history influenced your views on fashion?

Just as I described my fashion brand in one word, my personal style motto is “less is more” and I encourage my clients on the minimal yet classy lifestyle.

I’m sure people are willing to know the price range of your outfits?

Hahaha. Depending on what we are making, we charge from 10k upwards.

So what’s the price tag of the dress I am wearing?

Just 20k. Lol

How can my readers find you should they be interested in your product? Are you on social media?

Yes, I am on Instagram (@misterboya) and you can reach me on +2347055895245.
